HOS Setup

HOS Setup allows you to modify settings that affect mobile unit behavior and web application user permissions. Updated settings that affect how the driver uses HOS are sent to mobile units (that are powered on) within 28 minutes after you save the changes.

The red arrow indicates a required field. Spaces are not allowed at the beginning or end of any entry.

Omnitracs Settings

Warning threshold
The number of minutes before an Hours of Service violation that an alert is sent to the driver.
Unknown driver alerts
Check to send alerts to tractors that are in motion with no driver logged in.
Allow off-duty driving
Check to allow all drivers in Omnitracs-equipped vehicles to use the off-duty driving status.

MCP Settings

BOT distance threshold / BOT speed threshold
The distance in miles (km), or the speed achieved, at which a trip is considered to have started. These thresholds prevent a minor movement, such as movement within a yard, from being detected as the start of a trip. The first threshold that is detected sets the beginning of trip (BOT) parameter on the mobile unit. You can set one value to zero, but the other must have a valid value.
Minimum duty period
The minimum number of minutes that a duty status can consist of.
Allow log correction by drivers
Check to allow drivers to correct their non-driving duty status logs. Drivers are never permitted to edit driving duty status logs.
Clock in / clock out
Check to allow all drivers to clock in and clock out. This feature lets drivers account for on-duty work time that is spent away from the truck at the beginning or end of the day.
Personal Conveyance
Select whether to allow drivers to use the vehicle for personal use, such as driving home at the end of a shift. If you allow limited personal conveyance driving, you must specify the number of minutes drivers may drive under personal conveyance. This is triggered when the driver selects Personal Conveyance on the in-cab device and is only a timer, not tied to when the wheels are moving.
Personal Conveyance Limit
Indicate the daily limit for personal conveyance driving, in minutes.
Yard Move
For ELDs: Identify if you allow yard move driving time to accumulate. Be aware that for the driver to select yard move, the following criteria must be met:
  • The driver must be active
  • The unit must be on USA rules
  • The ignition must be on
Yard Move Termination
Specify if Yard Move ends based on: the in-cab unit power cycling (turn off/on), a speed threshold of 20 MPH (32 km/h), or both. Drivers may still terminate Yard Move by selecting another duty status.
24 Hour weekly reset
Check to allow specific drivers to use the 24-hour weekly reset option. After you enable it, you can assign it to individual drivers on the Administration, Driver tab.
Well site wait time
Check to allow drivers to record wait time at a natural gas or oil well site so that the wait time does not count against his/her daily 14 hour on-duty limit. After you enable it, you can assign it to individual drivers on the Administration, Driver tab.
Enable Reset Break Exemption
Check to allow drivers to take a rest break exemption.
Hazmat loads
Check to allow drivers to take rest breaks while in on-duty status. Enable this setting if you have drivers who are required to remain with the vehicle at all times because of the material they are hauling. After you enable it, you can assign it to individual drivers on the Administration, Driver tab.
The regulations only allow carriers of certain classes of explosives to use the on-duty rest break option. Regulation 397.5 states: (a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, a motor vehicle which contains a Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 (explosive) material must be attended at all times by its driver or a qualified representative of the motor carrier that operates it.

Only use the Hazmat loads option for drivers hauling this material. Any other use of the Hazmat loads exception is not allowed under the regulations.

Allow carrier selection on mobile
Check to allow drivers to select a carrier on their mobile unit. If enabled, you must create at least two carriers on the Administration, Carriers tab.
Reduce false violations alerts
Check to consider when a driver stops just short of a violation, before a violation alert is sent. This results in fewer false violation alerts reported in email alerts and through web services.
Include edit reason in driver logs report
When drivers and web application users edit logs they enter a reason for the edit. Check to include the edit reason in the Remarks section of the Driver Logs Report.
Edit reason required
Check to require that users type or select an edit reason when they edit a duty status log. The edit reason explains why the edit was made.
Allow freeform text in the edit reason
Check to allow users to type the edit reason instead of being limited to choosing from the pre-defined list.
Allow freeform text in remarks on host / mobile
Check to allow users (host) and/or drivers (mobile) to type a remark when they edit a duty status log.
Require remarks for all status changes
Check to require that users type or select a remark when they edit a duty status log. Remarks capture what happened during the status.
Remarks / edit reasons

Create, edit, or delete remark phrases for users and drivers to select when changing duty status or editing a log. Create a separate list of pre-defined remarks for each duty status type. Consider these limitations that apply to Off-Duty, Sleeper, Driving, and On-Duty statuses:

  • A maximum of 1200 characters for all remarks
  • A maximum of 40 remarks

To add a remark, select a duty status and click --Add--. In the text box next to the list, type a phrase, then click Update/Add to List. To change or delete a remark, select it, edit the text and click Update/Add to List, or click Delete.

To create, edit, or delete edit reasons for web application users, use the same steps, but select Edit Reasons in the list of duty statuses. Consider these limitations:

  • A maximum of 10 edit reasons
  • A maximum of 40 characters for each edit reason
